There is something very liberating about a fresh operating system install.

I've almost gotten to where I feel happy typing "format c:"...

Gronking the C: is always fun.

If you're doing the XP reinstall, I recommend using a Win 98 floppy to format and fdisk, then use the XP installer to convert it to NTFS.

There are custom XP boot disks floating around, if you need one, contact me via e-mail about where to obtain one.

you think that makes you feel good, you should try the debug script

debug
-F 200 L1000 0
-A CS:100
xxxx:0100 MOV AX,301
xxxx:0103 MOV BX,200
xxxx:0106 MOV CX,1
xxxx:0109 MOV DX,80
xxxx:010C INT 13
xxxx:010E INT 20
xxxx:0110
-G

nothing like a good old fashioned ultra low level format to erase all the icky nasties.

I actually got mad and did this once...

dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/hdd
dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/hdc
dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/hda

Put SuSE install CD in drive and pressed reset button

Filled EVERY ide hard drive in my system with '0' so as to obliterate the coding failure and cruft that caused my anger. Promptly re-installed Win95,NT4,SuSE Linux and proceeded to avenge the earlier disaster.

Sometimes, drastic and extreme solutions are called for :)
